It was famed Geneva-based watchmaker/jeweller, Jean-Francois Bautte who created the first pieces under the soon-to-be-famous Perregaux name. Bautte had passion, drive and talent in equal measure. He came into his own following the completion of several apprenticeships, as a case assembler, goldsmith and a jeweller. He became known for developing his own ‘fabrique’ (watch production facilities), which were the most comprehensive of the time, employing 180 workers on site, in addition to over 100 artisans who were home-based.
Used Girard Perregaux watches are beautiful creations. Check out the Vintage 1945 2588011421BB4A as a stunning example of what we mean. A 36mm x 49mm stainless steel case is set off by an attractive blue Arabic and a fetching blue alligator leather bracelet. Powered by automatic movement, this is a wonderful timepiece to look out for in the second hand Girard Perregaux watches listings.
However, when all is said and done, the name Girard Perregaux is perhaps mostw well-known for its connection with the James Bond franchise. In the novel ‘From Russia With Love’ Ian Flemin famously describes ‘a gold Girard-Perregaux on a brown crocodile strap’ as one of the ‘membership badges of the rich man’s club.’ From this moment onwards, the brand’s position as an iconic status symbol was pretty much assured.
